May I add that you don't necessarily need to be controversial or provocative to attract hate and threats - just being a little unusual or different can be enough. I posted some web pages about my world record collection of belly button lint. Harmless, inoffensive and quirky trivia, intended for amusement, yet I've had some very nasty messages in response to it. The way some wrote, you'd have thought I'd confessed to some sickening crime, not the mere gathering of lint to satisfy child-like curiosity. Some people have little tolerance for others who they see as "different", even in very unimportant matters. Those types may be a small minority, but I felt glad that when registering my domain names I used a PO box and my work phone number as the contacts, instead of my home details. Good advice.
